    ???? ????

Well, that’s a wrap on the Oscars 2022 ( writes Emma in LA)

There was a lot that worked at this year’s show, I thought. Firstly, there was genuine excitement on the red carpet, at humans mingling with each other again. I thought the all-female presenting trio had some genuinely funny moments, and I liked the cafe-style setting, with A listers and nominees sitting round near the stage. A lot of the tone was right I thought and CODA’s victories were heartwarming.

The ceremony was still three and a half hours long , but everyone will be searching online tomorrow for the three minutes of footage between Will Smith and Chris Rock.

Thanks for reading! And if you’ve been staying up to watch, sleep well!

The ceremony ends with our three hosts Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall in their pyjamas, wishing us all a good night ????.

It is 05.45 here in France, time to take a rest – for now.

And by the way ( adds Emma in LA)  .. if you haven’t already, you may want to check out the movie it was adapted from …the 2014 French film La Famille Bélier!

05:43

‘CODA’ wins Best Picture – and everyone in the audience is signing applause ( writes Emma in LA)

The film won in every category it was nominated in – and it marks the first streamer to ever win Best Picture, though it’s  not Netflix, it’s Apple TV+. It should be said though that the film was an independent one, which first debuted at Sundance 2021, and then bought by Apple.

For those who haven’t seen it, it’s a lovely coming of age story about the only hearing member of a deaf family, and although it’s not the most cinematic of choices ( if you wanted cinematic, it would have been The Power of the Dog or Dune) it really just resonates right now. It’s been, and continues to be, a tough two years, and this offers, as the producer said on stage, a film about love and family.

‘CODA’ wins Best picture, directed by Sian Heder. Well done!

05:30

Jessica Chastain wins Best Actress for ‘The Eyes of  Tammy Faye’.
And what a speech!

In accepting the trophy from Anthony Hopkins, she noted violence against minorities and that suicide was a leading cause of death for the LGBTQ community, saying she was inspired by Bakker’s compassion, AP wrote.

“I’m inspired by her [Tammy Faye’s] radical acts of love,” Chastain said. “I’m inspired by her compassion and I see it as a guiding principle that leads us forward.”

05:25

It should have been a straightforward coronation for Will Smith and King Richard at this year’s Oscars – but  accepting his Best Actor award, Smith said that he’d been warned that “at your highest moment, the Devil will come for you” – a reference to what passed between him and Chris Rock at this year’s Oscar ceremony.

Smith wept as he apologised to the Academy and his fellow nominees and said he hoped “they’d have me back” as he spoke about how both he and Richard Williams were people who wanted “to protect his family.” He added, “love will make you do crazy things.”

Presenter Amy Schumer – last seen dangling from the roof in a Spiderman costume – raised some laughs immediately afterwards when she said “I’ve been getting out of that costume. Did I miss anything? There’s a different atmosphere in here.”

Sir Anthony Hopkins came on afterwards. The veteran Welsh actor wished everyone “peace and love and quiet” while Will Smith smiled.
